As you're getting on the road this summer, heading for family vacations and weekend road trips, there is something important every driver should be keeping in mind...keeping your hands on the wheel, and your eyes on the road.
In 2010, Chrysler Group partnered with Car and Driver to launch a campaign called “TXT U L8R” that encouraged drivers to take a pledge against distracted driving. Along with the above video, a Facebook page, and marketing materials, a mobile application was released to help combat the problem of distracted driving. In a fast paced world, it is easy to get caught up in communicating with others and forget that while we are driving, we should be giving the road our full attention. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2009, distracted driving accounts for over 300,000 car crashes a year with over 5,000 of them becoming fatal. Statistics like these inspired Car and Driver to create their “TXT U L8R” application for mobile phones where the user turns on the application when entering their vehicle and the application will automatically respond to all incoming texts with a message indicating that the driver is busy at the moment and will respond later. The application also reads the incoming messages out loud so that the driver will not miss any important texts and in which case could pull over and answer an urgent message.
When a driver only has half a second to avoid a collision, it is imperative that their focus be at the wheel, and not on their phone screen.
