fuel economy early on, and we’ve now got the official EPA mpg numbers to decide for ourselves. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers two engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder capable of 184 hp, or the larger 3.2-liter V-6, rated at 271 hp. Both engines are mated to a new, ZF-produced nine-speed automatic transmission. You’ll also have the choice between front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive, a choice that significantly impacts the fuel economy on the 2.4-liter engine.

The entry-level 2014 Cherokee with the 2.4-liter engine can get 22 mpg city, 31 mpg on the highway, and a good 25 mpg combined rating. Send power to all four wheels, and the highway figure drops to 28 mpg, while city and combined figures take a 1 mpg hit. And the larger 3.2-liter engine? Cherokees powered by that powertrain get 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. Switch to all-wheel-drive and you only lose 1 mpg on the highway, and get the same 19 mpg city, and same 22 mpg combined figure. Compare those figures to the dismalfuel economy ratings of the outgoing Jeep Liberty with its 16/22 mpg and 15/21 mpg for AWD, and the improvement is clear. The Jeep Cherokee starts at $23,900 and can pierce the $30,000 range for highly-equipped models.
